Dunhuang
lies at the western end of the Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province in
Northwest China, an oasis on the eastern edge of Takli- makan Desert. It
is nourished by melted snow water from the Qilian Mountains. The ancient
town used to be an important stop-over point on the Silk Road. Today
Dunhuang attracts people with its numerous historic sites such as
Yumenguan Pass, ruins of Yangguan Pass, Wuwa Pond, Sanwei Mountain,
Ringing-Sand Hill, Crescent-Moon Pool and the many grotto carvings and
murals. The Ringing-sand Area is one of China's key tourist attractions.
The Buddhist art of Dunhuang is truly fascinating. The Mogao Caves are one
of the best preserved and most extensive collections of Buddhist paintings
and sculptures in the world.

Located
in the southern part of Anhui Province, the Yellow Mountains extend across
- Shexian, Yixian, Taiping and Xiuning. They rose above the earth surface
as a result of movement of the earth's crust over a hundred million years
ago. Later they underwent the erosion of Quaternary glaciation and have
gradually become what they are today. Magnificent and imposing, it is a
famous scenic spot full of wonderful sights.

The Yellow
Mountains are a marvel within an area of 154 square kilometres there is a
crowd of peaks, 72 of which have names indicating the shapes they
resemble. Lotus Brightness Apex and Celestial Capital are the three major
ones, all rising above 1,800 metres. .

The landscape of Guilin has been acclaimed as "the best under heaven."
Zhu Shude in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) added "eight scenic spots"
to the original "Eight Scenic Spots" and named them each in four
Chinese characters to describe their features. Later local people named
another eight scenic attractions to make them a total of 24.
Over the course of centuries many poets and painters have been drawn to
these parts, and they have all praised the beauty of Guilin in their
works.
